The Department of Sociology and Social Work offers all three degree programs. Sociology has been taught at Tbilisi State University since the 1920s, and the Social Work Education program was created in 2005 in partnership with the EU Tempus Program.

Today, BA and MA programs in the Department of Sociology unite theory and research through studies in proto-sociological, classical, modern and postmodern theories, and in methods of qualitative and quantitative research projects, with a wide choice of field work opportunities.

Social Work Education studies offer systemic and theoretical knowledge about the practice and role of social workers. Students are required to complete internships within governmental and non-governmental organizations and learn the importance of the professional social work values necessary for building a pluralistic society. They are taught to objectively analyze social and political contexts in order to bring about positive social change, while being committed to helping individuals thrive in their local environment.
